Chapter Twenty-Two

THOTH

I stared down at Delilah for hours, watching her sleep. She was beautiful. I hadn’t lied when I’d said she was a gift from Ra. The Sun God had clearly shown Delilah care with the way her hair shone with the colors of the celestial. Everything about Delilah was perfect. Her mind, her features, her complete willingness to help save a country not her own. The Herald had been chosen well. Somewhere, Ra was grinning from ear to ear at the wrench he threw into these plans.

We were meant to save Egypt, but Delilah had already become a priority greater than just being the Herald.

When Horus and Anubis finally came back inside the room, their eyes taking in the sleeping form of Delilah in the bed, it was when Ra had left the sky, and Khons had taken over with his moon. I was still looking down at the beautiful fire woman when they came inside quietly, closing the door behind them.

Anubis grinned, looking between us. “Already give her your heart, Ibis?”

“We all have,” I whispered, raising my brow at him. “Don’t pretend you didn’t the moment she woke us.”

Anubis frowned at my words, not arguing, but perhaps, having never thought of it himself, he genuinely didn’t realize. That would be his downfall. I, for one, already knew Delilah would hold everything that I was.

Horus narrowed his eyes on me. “It’s not wise to care for her at all. We should keep her alive because her life force is tied to ours and nothing else.” But his eyes trailed to the sleeping Delilah, too, a longing there I recognized. Horus knew the smart path, understood the true strategy, but strategy didn’t work on matters of the heart. The Sky God was in trouble. “Did it help?”

I frowned. “Help?”

“Fucking her?” Horus growled, but when Delilah shifted in her sleep, he lowered his voice. “Did it help get her out of your system?”

Ah. Now I understood. Horus thought the way to fix the problem was to give in and the feelings would just go away. The God was logical, strategic, but he was foolish.

“No,” I admitted, glancing down at her. “If anything, it only solidified my decision.”

“We should focus on Egypt,” Horus murmured, his face pinched.

“Why can’t we focus on both?” Anubis asked. “The Herald is meant to help us save Egypt. Why can’t we focus on both Egypt and her?”

“You can’t even have sex with her without risking ripping her soul from her chest,” Horus spat at Anubis, making the God of the Afterlife bristle. Anubis growled and took a step toward the falcon, but I held up my hand.

“Enough.” They both turned to me. “Delilah has a choice in this, too. She’s the Herald, and we may be Gods, but we’re only here because of her. The quicker we take care of this militia problem, the more Gods we can keep from coming through.”

As if in answer, the sky outside cracked with lightning and opened up, dropping rain on the desert at a time it never should have.
